At the time of its construction, the bridge was thought to be the most expensive railway bridge in the world, at a cost of $320,000 (equal to $8,595,692 today). It was the largest stone rail viaduct in the mid-19th century and is still in use."

It was built in 1847-1848 for the Erie Railroad and is 1040 feet long, 100 feet high, and 25 feet wide at the top. It is the oldest stone viaduct used today in Pennsylvania by the New York Susquehanna and Western Railway
