Description
The combination of three bridges in this view consist of the Bear Mountain Bridge, the railroad bridge along with the pedestrian bridge at Bear Mountain State Park. The Bear Mountain Bridge Spans the Hudson River between Westchester on the East and the intersection of Rockland and Orange County on the West. Construction began on the Bear Mountain Bridge in October 1923. It was built by The Bear Mountain Hudson River Bridge Company. The Bear Mountain Bridge opened on Thanksgiving Day 1924. New York State took over ownership of the bridge on September 26, 1940. According to the New York State Bridge Authority, original construction cost was $2, 900, 000.00. The Bear Mountain Bridge is a suspension bridge over 2, 250 feet long and the deck (where the cars drive) is over 150 feet above the Hudson River. The Bear Mountain Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
